Three Key Criteria of PCOS (Rotterdam Criteria)
Diagnosis is made when a woman meets at least two of the following three criteria:
- Irregular or Absent Periods (Oligo- or Anovulation)
- Hyperandrogenism (Excess Male Hormones): Facial hair growth (hirsutism), severe acne, male-pattern hair thinning
- Polycystic Ovaries on Ultrasound: Enlarged ovaries with 12 or more small antral follicles ('string of pearls' appearance)
Associated Health & Metabolic Concerns
PCOS goes beyond reproductive health. It is closely linked to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, weight gain around the abdomen, and increased long-term risk of type-2 diabetes and endometrial hyperplasia if untreated.
